Default Video Card or Monitor @ Fault ???

Before I go out and blow money on the wrong part to fix this, like to see what some of you think the problem is.

My screen does this dimming thing for a slit second then back to its original brightness. Kinda hard to explain. It has never done this before at 1440x900 and 60 Hz refresh rate. That is the native resolution for my monitor. It sometimes stops doing it but only if I don't touch the computer. I seriously don't think its my monitor, but maybe someone can confirm that I need a new video card for me before I go out and blow the cash. Could there be any other problems that could cause this? Thanks guys!

Hi there and welcome to PC Help Forum

Can you tell us;
Is this a PC or Laptop?
If it's a PC, is the monitor CRT or LCD?
What version of Windows are you running?

These types of issues can be difficult to fix at a distance, although I can give you some ideas;

Check the cable from the monitor to the VGA port on your graphics card. Make sure it's tight and not damaged

Try to get hold of another monitor and then connect it to run an extended (couple of days) test, to prove whether the problem is related to the existing monitor.

If you are comfortable with it, open the PC case and just make sure your graphics card is securely fastened to the port on the motherboard

kristoefer agrees: Was a big help even though video issues are hard to pinpoint remotely

I have no clue how lcd monitors work but I was reading some where that they have lamps in them, could a faulty lamp cause dimming and getting brighter until eventual total lamp loss?

well about two days ago my lcd monitor bit the dust .. guess that answers that question .. back light was going bad. Glad I already had plans with someone to borrow a ctr for testing.
