Default New Budget Graphics Card to Buy?

Well, it seems that my ATI Radeon X800 GTO^2 has packed it in, so any suggestions for what I could replace it with? I'd like to get a card at least as good, but not necessarily better. (I imagine I still have some future left in a card of that quality; I'm mostly playing Oblivion and HL2 at the minute, both of which the x800 ran fine for my purposes).

Two options that a quick search reveals are:
Geforce 8500GT 512MB
Sapphire X1650 PRO 256MB
(Both are PCI-E, as is my old x800)

Though I'm finding it very hard to find any way to compare these cards to the x800.

Any advice appreciated

Alex

I just got the replacement for my 7300GS card today. It's an 8600GTS SSC, and though it's no 8800, I can play 'Pong' with it. LOL

Thanks D, that's helpful.

Zinglebarb: Well, I'd like to spend no more than is necessary to replace my current card; though if I could get a *significantly* better card than that for *very* little more, I'd do that.

Alex

The 9600GT is the lower cost card of the moment

Thanks for the help all.

Ok, so after some more searching I think that both cards I originally suggested would be worse than the x800. I don't need anything too much better than that, but I don't want anything worse either.

One possible replacent would be the GeForce 9600GT, at around £100 (dabs, here: dabs.com - Dabs Value GeForce 9600GT 512MB DDR3 DUAL DVI 650/1800 HDCP (9600GT-H5GTCD).) But this is relatively pricey for me, and will obviously way outperform what I have. (meaning that my AMD3200+ processor would probably hold it back even if I had the money to burn on it.)

Any other suggestions? I found a XFX GeForce 8600 GT, at around £47 (amazon, here: Amazon.co.uk: XFX GeForce 8600 GT - Graphics adapter - GF 8600 GT - PCI Express x16 - 512 MB DDR II - Digital Visual Interface (DVI) ( HDCP ) - HDTV out: Electronics & Photo). For comparison with the x800, see: Video Card Comparison - GPUReview.com. I'm finding it hard to tell, but I think from that page implies that the GF8600 is better. Is that right?

£50 is realistically about the upper-end of my price range, so if that is right, then perhaps this is a sensible choice?

Thanks again for any help
