Exclamation [Resolved] The monitor..The card..and the supply...

hey all.

first post as things are a bit desperate atm, ok so heres the story.

I have an evesham pc, must be at least 4 years old. everythings been running smoothly.
then yesterday im playing GTA San Andreas and the screen just skews n distorts....then it goes black. finally i get the task manager up and end GTA all the while the screen keeps going black every five seconds the sound playing every 5 seconds to.

it doesnt seem like a monitor issue as it seems the mouse doesnt move at all when the screen is black or the keyboard. only when it comes back up.

confused i restarted the whole pc..all was fine. then i viewed an video avi...the video then skewed and distorted as it was playing started to look a bit like modern art. as a note i did add newest drivers. then rolled back to see if they made a difference...it didnt.

so thinking ok ..could be a heating issue i opened up the old girl and cleaned the entire thing out. the graphics card fan is working fine. all the fans are working fine. also now when i start up the pc and it does its usual count up of ram etc. the text appears weirdly like letters will have gaps in them. if that makes sense.

also after restarting one time i ended up with a screen full of multicoloured squares with various letters n symbols..including one of a small smiley face.felt like punchin the screen but oh well.

after gettin into safe mode nvidia control panel told me my the card was running at 50 degrees. ive never known it to go any higher than that even when running games in the past.

so now im completly stumped on what to do. its kinda funny though. i have less than three weeks till the big assignment is supposed to be handed in. genius.

sorry for the big post i figure the more info you guys have the better you can help me . thanks for reading.

idiot that iam sorry.

running on XP, Nvidia 6800fx, 1gb ram, 300 watt supply.

Hey bud,

I know how ya feel, my vid card conked out on me 2 weeks prior to me having to hand in my final edit of my movie.. XD

It does indeed sound like a dying video card, do you have any other card you can test things out with? Doesn't have to be an awesome card, just something that you know works and can at least play a video properly
