Default AGP video card help =X

Ok so Im looking into adding a video card to my 4 year old pc. I know that the slot type is an AGP 4x, but there really aren't any decent 4x cards. So if i bought an AGP card that had an 8x interface, would the card fit into the 4x slot? Please help, i've been really racking my brain for a few days now...if it helps i'd like a decent card that can play MOST newer games eg. Half Life , Counter Strike, Zombie Master etc....

Well its an HP Pavilion a287x Desktop, about 4 years old. Im not really sure about the exact specs of the mother board...All i know is that is that the graphics slot is an AGP 4x interface, with 3 PCI slots. Im looking into buying a PNY Verto GeForce FX 5200 .
