Default Nvidia 9600gt problem

Hi,

I have an amd athlon 64 x2 processor and an nvidia 6100 graphics chip.

I have just bout a pci e 8600gt and have fitted it into the correct slot.

However, when I power up the pc, I get no monitor display, from either the card or the original plug.

I have connected a lead from the card to the motherboard but it does not appear to need a power supply, since the fan spins on power up.

There is however, a small 4 pin socket near the bottom of the card which is unused.

Can anybody help as I'm out of my depth!?

If its a spare pci slot, I think that is the power dongle slot, which acomodates a pci-e wire that goes to the Power Supply Unit (not sure though)-which may be supplied with the card, also uninstall any other graphics drivers before installing the new ones
