Default Computer Freezing up

I have a friend thats going to school at Pittsburgh right now and he is having some problems with his computer. He has a custom built computer that is only about a year old. I don't have the specs on his machine, but he is having a problem.

He was rearranging his room and he said that he unplugged his computer, then after moving his room around, plugged his computer back in, and then the monitor turned on but would say that its not receiving a signal from the computer. So he tried changing outlets and tried another monitor. Well he said that it turned on once, only to make it to the windows boot screen and then it froze up and would not respond to keyboard or mouse. Then he manually switched off the computer. Then the monitor went back to saying there is no signal.

He then used compressed air to clean off the video card and took the video card out and put it back in. When he tried to turn it on this time, it made it to the windows login screen then froze again! So what might be causing this issue?

He thinks its the video card because of the monitor saying not receiving a signal. But I feel like it could be a lot of different things.

Is there any steps he could take to narrow down his problem?

He did say he tested the monitor on another machine and it worked fine. That wasn't an issue to begin with.

But maybe a windows or driver problem right?

Any help would be much appreciated! My buddy is at school and has some things on his machine that he needs for class!

Thanks everyone!

Hey Welcome to PCHF

what you might wanting to try and do is connecting the monitor and the system to seperate plugs i had a plug that went to my screen and system but then i couldent run my pc very well when i upgraded it so that may be his problem

if it is not that try running it in safe mode press F8 alot but not fast when it is booting and then select safe mode you will also need to do this for the next bit and if it works in safe mode reinstall the graphics card with the disk and then restart computer to normal settings

or try connecting the screen to the VGA port if it has one and take the video card out of course and connect it in there if that works it would be his graphics card.

if that dose not work let me know cause i have alot more solutions but i just need to know if those simple things work 1st before i go advanced

Hope i Could help
