Default Driver Issue?

Hello, So my issue started with some installed games such as SIMS freezing with sound still going and not being able to get out except by manual shut down. I thought it may be the onboard graphics driver needed to be updated however when I tried I got this message: This driver cannot be installed on this computer. Please contact the computer manufacturer for further info. Setup will now exit
My system is no longer under any warranty so I doubt that Dell would help me.
I then figured while I was at it I would check my soundcard drivers. I tried updating those only to be sent to the blue screen of death and having to enter in safe mode and do a system restore. So I'm not sure if I'm trying to install the wrong drivers or if theres something wrong with the current ones but if anyone could please advise it would be appreciated.
Here are some specs if any more info is required let me know. Thanks.

Dell Dimension 3000
Intel Pentium 4
CPU 2.80 GHz

I thought it was but when I tried downloading the video driver a couple weeks or so ago I remember there being a more detailed description that led me to believe it was a newer driver. Looking at it now it seems as though I have the most recent version. So would that be why I got that message? So if I have the most recent version any idea what else could be causing my games to freeze?

Ok, then I think it's best that you download (as a minimum) Chipset, Video and Audio from the link I gave you above and let us know how you get on.

Well I went to the dell site and clicked to download the chipset driver and as it was installing it crashed my pc just like when I tried to update my soundcard driver. So now I'm on another pc with the blue screen of death on the other one. What should I do now? Should I restart? Restore? What?
It says: If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer, If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the Stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters.

Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup options, and then select Safe Mode.
