Default [Pending] Desktop Flickering/Games Lock up

Hi All,

Need some help here. I'm running dual Nvidia GeForce 79000GT/GTO cards. I am experiencing flicker of the desktop (ghost images) when I first boot up. It does not last long however after playing games for a couple of hours I will begin to see the following:
  1. Long lines/shadow will show from objects within the game.
  2. Flickering will begin - it highlight objects within the game screen and jumps around.
  3. The screen will sometimes go completely white then lock up the computer for a few minutes. The screen will come back to the game however the flickering becomes so bad that the game is unplayable.
  4. As I run two monitors this flickering will start with one but eventually impact on the second one.
I find when this happens if I shut the computer down for a time it will help solve the problem however it eventually returns.

I run liquid cooled AMD Athlon 64 FX-60 Dual Core processors, the 7900GT cards (as above), Creative SB X-FI sound card, 2 GB DDR ram, and two monitors (Both are Suncmasters - 1 940BF and the other 94BW). As I generally run two monitors I'm not in SLI mode, I did however use SLI and did get the same flickering occuring. I have updated my drivers as of yesterday (14 Nov 07) but this did not resolve the issue.

I suspect that there may be a heating problem ( as this flickering will stop once I shut off my computer for a while but will begin again after 2 - 3 hours). The the readout for processor temp show to be between 29 - 35 degrees celcius.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Agamemon Welcome to PCHF

How many watts is your power supply?

Have you tried just one video card with just one monitor? Try one card by itself and see if it happens. If it does, then try the other card by itself.

Also, do you have on-board video that you can test with (unplug both video cards and just run on-board video)? You can also try leaving the computer run for a couple hours with no screen saver and no 3d application and see if it flickers after a while. If it does in that situation, that would indicate it is not a temperature problem cause your computer shouldn't be hot in that situation.

I doubt that you have a heating problem considering your CPU is running so cool and you are using a liquid cooled system. Can you check your NVidia control panel to see what temps your video card is running at when it starts to flicker? I actually use ATI tool even though I have an NVidia card...its interface is just much more simple and has a great simple way for checking for artifacts.

Try running Memtest (click my link below). That will test your memory for errors. It is a free download. You will create a bootable disk and boot to it. As soon as you boot to Memtest it starts automatically. Just let it run for one full pass and see if any errors occur.

Let's go from there.
