Default [Answered] 512mb > 256mb?

I have another thread questioning my Power Supply Unit. I've researched all day, and seem to be fine, however, now I pose another question to you. I'm torn between a GeForce 7600GT (256mb) or a GeForce 7600GT (512mb). The 512mb is cheaper than the 256mb, however, all I've read on the 256mb card is praise, saying how well it can cope for casual gaming. I'm tempted to go for the 256mb then the 512mb, but is it possible that the 256mb card is better then the 512mb card?

Another question before I forget. I think my motherboard has a 16x PCIe slot which can only run at x8. How much will this affect gameplay as well as 3D modeling/rendering in Cinema 4D and programs a like?

Thanks again.

Hello Mr.Chris, welcome to PCHF.

Memory helps, but check the clock speed between the two cards, as clock speed is more important than memory.

As for the question about your PCIe slot, this would be the first time I've ever heard of a x16 running at the same speed as a x8? There are normally only 4 types of PCIe slot:

Smallest is PCIe x1, which has a bandwidth of 264 Mb per second.
Next is the PCIe x4, which has a bandwidth of 1 gb per second.
Then the PCIe x8, with a bandwidth of 2 gb.
Finally, the largest (which is what you should be using), is the PCIe x16 with 4 gb.

What motherboard do you have?

Thanks for the welcome/reply

My Mobo is a GeForce6100SM-M. I'm not sure why it is capped at x8, I'll have to find that out. However, I may be wrong as it could be a different model to my Mobo.

As for the clock speeds:
7600GT (256mb)
Memory Clock Speed 1400MHz
Ramdac Clock Dual 400MHz
7600GTX (512mb)
Memory Speed: 800MHz

So I take it the 256mb one is, in fact better. Great (If I'm reading it right, anyway :P)

Oh I can see what you mean from the ECS web site. I'm sure they mean you can use an x8 card in the x16 slot.

EDIT: Marked as Answered.
