Question [Answered] 6800XT problems

I have bought a s/h xfx geforce 6800 xtreme 256mb ddr3 agp card, I removed the old driver from my ati 9600SE and turned off pc, removed ati card, installed 6800, added power lead to card, booted pc back up, pc froze on desktop, i turned it off then windows wouldnt even boot up, I have read on the box that this card requires a minimum 500watt psu, i have a 480, not sure if this is the problem.

any ideas?? or anything else to try

Hello spawneruk, welcome to PCHF.

Yep, I would say that power may well be you issue by the sounds of it.

Double check your power requirements here: eXtreme Power Supply Calculator v2.5 (click on Lite).

Double check that the 4pin power connector is securely plugged into the back of the card (if required).

Finally, are you able to boot to safe mode (f8 during startup) to make sure the ATI driver is fully removed from device manager (Control Panel > System > Hardware Tab > Device Manager).

lol, my boss asked me if I pee'd the bed when I got into work early this morning !

There is another option within the windows startup menu which shows "Enable VGA Mode". Can you try this option. If that fails, try to put the old card back in.

Make sure all the drivers have been removed, and make sure you also remove from Device Manager. If your PC is still working with your old card, we can be sure that there are no Operating System issues on your PC.

Yep F8 > "Enable VGA Mode" if using your Geforce. If you can't boot with the Geforce card in VGA mode, then you certainly have a hardware problem, but I think it's most likely you need to clear your ATI drivers off first in Device Manager. Right click on your ATI graphics card under Display Adaptors, and uninstall. For example:
