Default Black & white TVOUT

Hi

I am a Pal user (in UK) and am using a Radeon X1950XT

i used to use a composite video cable to connect my tvout and everything was fine.

the problem is that i thought i may aswell upgrade to a Svideo as the output is better.
so i did and plugged it in, but for some reason the output is in black and white now,

is there anyway to correct this, i am assuming its a Pal/NTSC thing but i havnt managed to figure out how to change the output format.

I am using the Catalyst 7.3 drivers with the CCC

Hey BOC,

Are you converting the format to NTSC?

Here is what ATI has to say about the situation you are experiencing.

TV OUT is Black and White with a PAL-M or PAL-N Television

When an ATI product with TV OUT (sometimes called "PC2TV") is configured to OUTPUT a television signal to a PAL-M or PAL-N TV, the picture will appear black and white on the television.
Many ATI products (such as the ALL-IN-WONDER Family) offer video Input in multiple broadcast standards. North American versions of these products typically support capture in NTSC, PAL-M, and PAL-N formats.
TV OUT, however, is limited to NTSC only on these North American models.
PAL-format TV OUT is supported by some European models of our products; however, PAL-M and PAL-N output support is not included in the European version either.
ATI TV OUT capable products do not support TV OUT in native PAL-M and PAL-N formats.
Most televisions sold in PAL-M and PAL-N regions also support NTSC signals.
Some TV's may adapt automatically to the format of the incoming signal, while others must be "switched" or "adjusted". Please consult your television documentation to determine if your TV supports NTSC input and how to configure it.
Have you checked your televisions manual regarding settings?

Looking forward to your reply,

TTFN

Default No help

I am not trying to convert to ntsc or from ntsc, my output for the region is Pal/I which is not affected by the stated post,

i have already been there and checked that lol.

however i may know what is causing this,

when i was using a composite connection the TVout was only using a refresh rate of 25Hz whereas with Svideo is is now using 60Hz

this TV is very old and would i be right to assume that my TV will not support Pal60 which would be why this is occuring.

Hey BOC,

It's possible. Since you've already been down this path, I am assuming that you have already maxed out your Hardware Acceleration.

You aren't by any chance connected through an SCART are you? I found another reference to a black and white result with SVIDEO and SCART connection.

Have you tried a different telly? Just to test, it would at least let you know if you should continue troubleshooting, or go back to your composite connector.

Looking forward to your reply,

TTFN

as a matter of fact i am using a Svideo to scart adapter, the scart then plugs into a 3way adapter along with my xbox and ps2 then that goes into the TV.

i havnt yet managed to test this on another TV as i dont quite fancy carrying a 32" widescreen CRT upstairs just to test it lol, i may take my PC downstairs just to test this out.

and yes my hardware accel is maxed lol.

i hope it is just a TV issue, it could be quite possible because i know that even on the PS2 setting a game to pal60 caused it to lose its colour,

and can you just verify the 60hz refresh rate does link with the Pal60

because i didnt see any mention of the 60hz in the information about it,
all i could find was that it was NTSC scanlines with Pal colour frequency

OK here is the bit recarding the SCART adapter from the ATI website.

737-518 : Black and White Image on Television Using 3rd Party SCART Adapter with an S-Video Jack

The information in this article applies to the following system configurations:
  • TV OUT using 3rd party S-VIDEO to SCART adapter
  • PAL or MULTISYSTEM TVs (most often found in European countries)
The symptoms described are not specific to ATI products. This Infobase is provided for the convenience of users, especially in Europe. The signal on the TV set may show up black and white using a 3rd party S-VIDEO to SCART adapter.
A SCART connector only supports composite video. If you connect an S-VIDEO cable directly into a SCART adapter, the result will be a black and white signal, regardless of the type of graphics card being used.
There are preferred S-VIDEO to SCART adapters from 3rd party vendors that will properly give you colour display.
Third party S-VIDEO to SCART adapters are available at the following URL:Please note: This site is a third party internet site on the World Wide Web.
