Default Installing New ATI Card

Bought a ATI Radeon 9800 SE AIW and having problems getting it working.

Someone told me i should disable my onboard SiS 651C graphics card in BIOs before putting my new card in. I went to BIOS by pressing F2 at startup but I couldnt see anything about graphics or VGA.

So I just went into device manager , and disabled Sis 6510 graphic adapter . turned the PC off , put the new graphics card in , but my PC wouldnt boot up. At first it kept making funny bleeping noises , but that stopped once i positioned the card correctly. Then when I truend it on it made the usual background loading up noise , but the BEEP! that indicates the PC is booting up didnt come , also the monitor was blank the whole time.

I had to take the card out again to get on this.

Are any experts avaliable on MSN? I'd find that a bit easier to get help.

Device Manager:

I've disabled the SiS 651C bit under Graphic Adapter , but should I also be disabling the Sis items under System Devices?

Also there doesnt seem to be a port on the graphics card that my monitor will fit into :S

Will I need a DVI to VGA adapter like someone suggested to me?

Hi 1Mac, welcome to the PCHF.

We prefer to stay off MSN with advice, so everyone can see what is going on - and time zone differences are too hard to figure out.

DVI/VGA adapters won't make a difference....it will only make a difference if you have a DVI cable...and even then it's normally not noticable to the human eye.

In regards to the card not working when you plug it in...have you been plugged the extra power into the back of the card (inside the case) and is your power supply big enough to run it?
To find out if you have enough power - goto PSU Calculator in my signiture and put in all your computer details, it will tell you how much you need...ad 30% onto the figure, and that's how much you want.

EDIT: In regards to disabling the on board video card - this won't make "much" difference....infact, unless you can disable it in the BIOS - it won't make any difference at all.

Thanks mate , ill give that calculator a shot.

But what im saying is the Monitor's cable won't fit into the Video Card. The card only has a port for DVI , and the Monitor's cable is for VGA.

I dont know what you mean by plugging in the extra power to the card :S

Oh, i apologise...

You will need a DVI adapter then unfortunately.
They're fairly cheap and you can pick them up from any local computer shop (not too sure where any are around you

You probably don't need the extra power come to think of it...the 9800 is a fairly old card now....

So I dont need anything going into the white port bit on the graphics card?

Will a Pc start up as normal if the monitor is plugged into the wrong place?
Like my Pc doesnt sound like its booting up normally when I keep the monitor in the same place , but with the graphics card installed?

Just from curiosity , what should happen when I put the graphics card in and boot up?

I have connected the card upto the PSU no problem. Connected the monitor to the card through an adapter no problem.

The card is definatley in right , I cant see anything orange on ther bottom of it.

Yet whenever I turn the Pc on with the card installed , it won't come on , it just loads for a while , no BEEP! like usually when the PC is booting up.
