Unhappy ATI X1900 XTX Not Throttling in Games?

So my ATI X1900XTX is supposed to run at lower clocks when not in a 3D App right?

Well my dilemma is that I can monitor my GPU and Memory clocks (via ATI Tray)

And they don't seem to be going up when I enter 3D mode, could someone enlighten me as to whether or not this is a problem, and if it is how to diagnose it?

Thx :-D

Btw i've gone to ATI with different problems and I believe I mentioned this but they avioded the topic altogether.

Hi ColdPhire,

Welcome to PCHF.

Just a guess on my part but it might have a lot to do with how much the 3D app really pushes your card. If I recall correctly some 3D cards actually have an easier time handling 3D graphics than they do with 2D graphics simply because they are designed primarily for 3D.

There's a chance I'm wrong on this so I wouldn't bet your house on it.

Your correct ron,,,

Once in 3d mode your frame rates will go down a little even with that heft 1900xtx..You could overclock it a bit to see if it helps, as the 1900xtx is easily overclockable..
When 2d render goes into effect (on some games) your framrates should jump up but as ron said the card has to try harder to render them into 3d. So its not really a problem just a forseeable spike..Overclock it about 20 for the memory and 30 for the gpu core.

I actually a little confused because I'm not really having any frame rate spikes or big problems.

I just think that my video card, which is supposed to automatically clock from about 500 to 650 GPU and 1250 to 1550 memory when I get in games, isn't doing just that, and if this is the case... then im clearly not getting the performance I paid for

Thanks :-D

Through ati tool is it telling you that it is not giving you that boost or do you have to manually overclock the card to that number? The 1900xt wont auto overclock

X1900 XTX (not sure if typo or non-different) But anyways...

An easier way to explain it would be if I open up the built in ATI Overdrive in the ATI CC, it says my requested clock is 650 and 1550 respectively but it is currently only running at 500 and 1200 respectively... I'm assuming it ramps to the requested clock when in 3D mode but maybe my card is defective and wont clock nomally...

In which case ATI is gonna get it hard from me
