Default [Answered] Screen goes black randomly

This problem just started occurring yesterday. I'm running Windows XP and at random times the monitor will just go black as if it shut off, but the power LED stays on. If I turn the monitor off and back on the screen displays once again but only for a while. It seems like this tends to happen rather quickly if I'm not using the mouse for a few minutes or just letting the PC sit idle. I checked the fan on the video card and it's working fine. I'm running a GeForce4 Ti 4800 that I've had for about 4 years now so I thought maybe the card is dying but I don't want to spend the money on that if there's something else going on. Any help is very much appreciated.

Hello Asathor

Welcome to PC Help Forums

Have you made sure the settings in Power Options for your monitor have not been altered to "Turn Monitor off after x minutes"?

Yes I made sure. At first I also thought maybe that was the problem, but the screen goes black and nothing will turn it back on except turning the monitor off and back on. I used to have the power save function on and that worked just fine. I just have no idea what's wrong. Could it be the monitor?

Is it possible to hook a known good monitor to it and see how that runs for a while?

Unfortunately, I don't think so. The problem hasn't occurred again for a while now so I don't think it's that drastic, but I will need to fix this before it gets out of control. When I'm able to try out a known working monitor I'll let you know how that went. Thanks for quick replies and help. I appreciate it.
