Default [Fixed] Weird? Strange?

Hi there. Thanks for letting me join you. Okay I am a newbie, even if I am 74. I run a PC with Windows ME operating system. 256 MB of memory. CPU is AMD Athlon XP 1800MZH (6.75x267) 2200+ My display card os NVidia GeForce4 MX 440 with AGP8X

Hope that this info helps? I was working the other day and the computer went down. It refused to switch back on for about half an hour. When it did eventually switch back on again I found that my display had reverted to 16 colours. All my icons were huge. I could not use my photo software as it needs 256 colours.

Okay I knew that I could go into display and settings, put the screen resolution back to 256 colours. But could I? Every time I attem[t to do this it goes straight back to 16 colours again. Weird? I have checked out the graphics card and the system tells me that it is working as it should, but if thats so, why cannot I alter my screen resolution? Can anyone help? Many thanks. Walt.

Welcome to PCHF!

Have you tried changing the resolution and colours through the graphics card brand's control panel if there is one?

Default Thanks Upgrader

Sadly I do not know of any such facility for my Graphics Card. It would certainly be great if there was. Thanks for trying anyway. Walt

To access graphic settings Right click any blank space on your desktop/scroll down to properties/settings.
If you have the driver for your video-card still available
--it should appear here. If it has "crashed" (it happens) you should still be able to change basic settings here. If you cannot ...you need to un/reinstall your card. Piece of cake.
Post back-- if you can't access your settings--
buttons in properties won't work... that means that it has crashed and windows is running it's very basic default video drivers to keep your display working.

Drivers can be downloaded from this link-- you will have to agree to the end-user license agreement (EULA)
in order to download the file.

Many Many thanks for all your help. I decided to go for the new driver download and was so excited to see that everything came back to normal. I now have the screen resolution I need. You are all such great guys and I bow my head to you. Again....many thanks Walt.

That's what we're here for.

Video driver problems are one of the most common PC issues... and since Windows is almost totally visually-oriented (hence the name) -- it really screws up the works.
Glad you got it fixed.
