vs

Issue: I have two computers, one running the mx420 and the other running the fx5200. I'm told the fx5200 is a better card than the mx420, however, when running games the mx420 outperforms the fx5200. I'd like to know why.

The mx420 is on a generic dell computer running at

The fx5200 is on a custom computer specs listed below

Howdy there,

The fx5200 is definately much better than the mx420, both in speed and looks

Your performance problem could be a number of things:

Fragmented drive:
  • Try running scandisk and defrag on your machine
Ram issue:

Your machine says it has "System Memory 1280 MB (DDR SDRAM)". This is a strange amount of RAM and could possibly mean that you are mixing and matching RAM which could slow down the system.
Make sure that you only plug RAM of the same specifications in
For example:
  • All the same size e.g 512MB
  • All the same speed e.g 333Mhz
What type of games are you trying to run on both systems?

How do i know whether the RAM is the same?

but i dont know where scandisc is located

are there any other ways to check why the 5200 card is slower?

could the power supply be an issue? if it is how can i determine this

Even after I format my computer the card still runs slower, any explanations?

Thanks for the response

To run scandisk and defrag you go to the following menu:
Start - programs - accessories - system tools (both scandisk and defrag will be in there)

How do i know whether the RAM is the same?
The best way of checking is to remove the RAM from your computer and check the sticker on it. It should give you a list of number including RAM type/speed/mhz e.g DDR300/128
Here is a photo of a sticker that may assist you - http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/akiba...mage/nddr5.jpg

If you are unsure you can post the number on each stick of RAM, also tell us how many RAM pieces you are using.

are there any other ways to check why the 5200 card is slower?

could the power supply be an issue? if it is how can i determine this
I still don't think it is an issue with these two things, so lets try to look into the RAM issue for now and then we can make a plan from there.

well i have 3 sticks of ram and from what I found out, is that with these 3 sticks my game performance is better and i also tried clocking my vid card but that seemed to cause problems too, so I'm going to rule out the ram issue since my game runs better with the 1.28 gigs

the formatting and scandisc im not too sure, though what i remember is that the game performance was still just as bad as it was now and was worse than the gforce 4 . i will do the scandisc to see but i dont know how that is going to help me.

could my card be defective? or the power source insufficient? I mean i did try over clockingi t and failed to see an increase in performance

The increased ram definitely helped the performance so i dont know what else there is to do, especially since you guys say the 5200 is far better than the g4
