Unhappy GeForce 6800 GT problem

Helo all. I have a problem with installing my graphics card, a GeForce 6800 GT. For some reason, my computer isn't registering that I've installed the thing at all! I even tried running the Add New Hardware wizard after plugging it in, and nothing. I lost the installation disc, but a friend told me the only useful thing on that was the drivers, which I downloaded from nvidia.com. When I try to install the drivers, I get a message telling me that no drivers were found that were compatible with my hardware. When I plugged my wireless network card in, I got the New Hardware Found message on rebooting the PC, but this did not happen when I plugged in the graphics card. In case it is important...I am running Windows XP with fully updated Service Pack 2 installed in it. Can anyone hel me figure out what is going on? Is my graphics card fried or am I doing something wrong?

I ran that, and the only thing I see on what it bings up that resembles my graphics hardware is this..."VIA/S3G UniChrome Pro IGP [Display adapter]
EMA 17f3 [Monitor] (15.7"vis, September 2005)"...which was under a heading of Display.

Also, before anyone asks, yes I'm sure the card is seated properly, and yes the fan is pinning normally. But the new hardware found message never appears, and there is no mention of the card anywhere in the Device Manager.

Aha! it looks like you still have your onboard vga display adapter enabled in the bios - dis-able it and re-boot with your new card inserted.
