Default [Answered] very confusing security issue

Hello All

After having some operating system nightmares, I've recently installed XP and immediately got inundated ith viruses before I could sort my security out. I've got rid of everything I can see/think of/that A-V can find, but I'm still experiencing some strange problems. My 2 main concerns are that:

1. I can't download any files from the web. I get a message saying that my security settings won't allow me. So I go Internet options/security/internet to change the custom level, and the tab won't allow me to select. All other tabs are fine, just this one...

2. I've updated graphics drivers but my display is still not as good as it was with 2000.

Below is all my? system info.

Can anyone help please? Exasperated!

Cheers

Hello and Welcome to PCHF

Have you install service pack 2 on your system yet?

I have never seen that problem with the security tab so lets try iron a few things out.
When you go into the Security Tab do you get the following two buttons - Custom Level and Default Level
If so try to click on Default Level, this should give you a bar which you can move between High and Low, try change this.

In connection with the graphics card, have you checked the Display options Tab within control panel and made sure that it is set to at least 16Bit (or 32Bit if you have the option.)

Hi Zimbo, thanks for the welcome and getting back to me

I've changed the security level and its allowed me to d/l a firewall so thats one problem sorted. not totally comfortable with operating at a lower than advised security level in the browser though - should i be concerned? the custom level tab is still unavailable. odd.

I don't know if I've got serevice pack 2 installed. I've had a few automatic updates so am unaware if this was one of them. when i went to windows update, i got the following error:Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested page. You may find the following resources helpful in resolving the problem:

Any ideas?

The graphics card is set to 32 bit, so no change there and still looks a bit odd

thanks again

It would probably be best to set the security tab back to the way it was. (always safer that way)
Very strange that the Custom Level is still unavailable (I will keep looking for info on that)

The best way to check what service pack you are running is to Right Click on My Computer and go to Properties.
Under System it should either say Service Pack 1 or Service Pack 2.
I recommend you update to Service Pack 2 if you don't already have it

Here is some information on the error you get when trying to download updates from the microsoft site
