Greetings from a newbie,
I've had a persistent problem with Acrobat Pro 6.0, which is generally a good program. But if I attempt to launch PDFMaker from within Word, it hangs forever and then pronounces the PDF failed.
I use Open Office to make my PDFs instead, but it means that Acrobat Distiller is not working. If I try to print to Acrobat from within any program, e. g. Corel, Open Office, etc., I get this message:
%%[ Error: Courier not found. Font cannot be embedded. ]%%
%%[ Error: invalidfont; OffendingCommand: findfont ]%%
Stack:
/Font
/Courier
/courier
%%[ Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%%
%%[ Warning: PostScript error. No PDF file produced. ] %%
Now, obviously Courier is in the Fonts folder (I use Adobe type manager to manage my fonts, (being a graphic artist, I use a lot) but have checked the Fonts folder).
When this failure takes place, the Acrobat 3-cornered icon stays spinning in the Task tray ( the hidden bit at bottom right of the desktop), and doesn't go away until I restart the computer, which is using XP in 1.6GHz and 512 Mb memory.
Does anyone know how to shake up Acrobat Distiller? Its interface is fairly opaque. I have had this same problem on two installations on twodifferent computers.

Hello and welcome to PCHF
There was an issue with printing from within office with Acrobat, and I think it was fixed on version 8 and above (or it existed into version 8 as well). I went around that problem by using a free .pdf printer for creating my documents, and Acrobat for editing them. If I remember correctly though, I had some difficulty getting the softwares working together...

I use CutePDF for creating PDF files from word and other apps. Never had a problem.
You should try Adobe Acrobat 8 and see if the problem is fixed. CutePDF - Create PDF for free, Free PDF Utilities, Save PDF Forms, Edit PDF easily. |

In Acrobat 9 pro, the issue does not exist for sure, however-no criticism intended Amtech- we are becoming too casual in suggesting people use the next version of an expensive application..
clarence, why don't you check in Adobe if there is any patch or workaround available addressing that issue? You can also check on Microsoft Office site.

Hello all! I have to jump in....
Our graphics guy at the office also had this issue. He was very reluctant to "leave" Acrobat Pro 6.0 After hours of conversation with Adobe Tech Support, we found no resolution in that version. We did upgrade to 9.0 Pro and have had no issues.I believe that we also tried the CutePDF Printer as an alternate solution for him, but there were issues with that and something else he did with PDFs. Don't recall what that problem was though. Just remember that it didn't work for us to go that route.

Sorry I misread the original post. I thought the problem was with Adobe's free PDF reader. (not with it today!)
But are Adobe seriously charging for PDF printer software? It seems ridiculous. Another option is FoxitPDF which also does printing. There are many alternatives. CutePDF is the best though. The only problems I've had have been with orientation (portrait/landscape) issues which are easily fixed. Unless Adobe Acrobat gives some sort of improvement in quality then I don't see how Adobe can justify charging people for it. |
