ok the settings look ok , i dont know if this has been covered but could you check the time date and zone settings
double click on the time in the bottom right hand corner, please check and adjust if neccessary the date and time ,when done please click on apply > then click on the time zone tab ,please check and adjust for your location time zone ,when done click on apply > please ensure there is a tick in the box for automatically adjust for daylight saving ,again click apply then select the tab for internet time ,please put a tick in the box for automatically synchronize with an internet time server ,click apply.
please click on update now for the internet time server sync and wait for the message just underneath to say " the time has successfully been sync'ed " etc.. once completed please close the time window.
and then try to access gmail please

Yep, already tried this unfortunately, on a couple of occasions. I've just done it again today just to make sure but the problem' definitely still there. I've also uninstalled and reinstalled ie8 completely on a previous date without that solving anything, and I've cleared out temporary internet files, cookies and SSL slate (based on previous advice from a friend). Still nothing.

Meriades,

I have recently dealt with the exact same problem. I found the answer over on the Mozilla forums. The problem is related to a hijacked hosts file and will affect Firefox and IE equally. I'll just copy and paste the solution below along with the link. Good Luck!
"What you have to do is go to this directory "C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc". In that directory there is a file named "hosts". Open that file in a text editor, such as notepad. The _ONLY_ entry that should be in that file is "127.0.0.1 localhost" (w/o the quotations). You may be surprised to find many entrys in this file in reference to google. Therein lies the problem. Backspace/delete all those other entries so the file contains just the one line I pointed out above and you will be good to go. Make sure you do this while the browser is closed. IE uses this same file also so if you tried using IE you would have the same effect."

Hah! Sir, (or Madam), you're a legend. This has worked perfectly, and it's something I would never have found in a million, million years of searching. The WTF-ery of computers will never cease to amaze me.

Mods, please mark me as FIXED, and BlazersFan79, you my eternal gratitude!

Thank you!!

Meriades,

You are certainly welcome, but all credit goes to whoever figured this out on the Mozilla forums. I had been watching this thread for the past few days as I was having the exact same problem. I found next to nothing on the web in reference to this problem. I know what you mean about the WTF-ery of computers. Anyway, I'm glad this worked for you and hopefully someone else will find this useful as well. Oh and it is sir.
