My computer used to be too fast for me actually. Now it freezes up. I try opening a program like firefox for example, it takes a while for it to open up, and then when it does, if I click on anything it will be "Not Responding"
I opened task manager and noticed that the CPU is not even working, or at least not showing that it is working, and I also don't hear anything from the case like I usually do. It will then work for maybe 4 seconds and pages load like normal, but then freeze again for about 30 seconds, and the cycle happens forever. So I guess its lagging rather than freezing. This is not only with programs that need internet, but also just browsing through folders.
-I took apart my computer and put it back together (no use)
-I tried system restore to before the problem started (no use)
-I uninstalled the last installed program, which happend to be a java movie viewer or something to that effect (no use)
Right now I'm in safe mode w/networking, otherwise I couldn't even ask for help.
I built this desktop a little less than a year ago and has been running perfectly till now.
-Gigabyte Intel P45 motherboard
-Intel Wolfdale Core2Duo Processor 3.0GHz
-4 GB DDR2 800 (I should also mention that I used to see about 2.2 GB of ram normally being used on task manager, and now I only see about 1.3 GB. Safe mode only uses 730 MB)
-ATI Radeon HD 4800 GPU
-WD 640GB Caviar Green HD
Please help, I don't want to stay in safe mode forever!

Hello mrangerm
Welcome to PC Help Forum You don't say what size the psu is unless I've missed it. I would have suggested a dust build up but you've had it apart so that's ruled out. Have you ran a disk clean up or a disk check at all? Have you tried a defrag perhaps although some people have mixed feelings on that?

I dont think a defrag would help this particular issue
This could be caused by some kind of virus although not likely Coz you mentioned you are missing RAM possibly try taking 1 stick out and running it on just one One of the RAM sticks could be dead and causing this issue Another thing could be that your OS is corrupt or becoming corrupt and this would require a full re-format Please post if you try either of these and also post results |

Thanks for the replies.
I'm running the computer in safe mode now and it works just like it normally should. I went to pcpitstop.com yesterday to do a full pc test, and there were no viruses. It showed the hard drive at 33% for fragmentation. I will try pulling out one memory stick to see what happens. I might also try updating the video card driver if my computer is fast enough to let me do so in normal mode. |

Go to and download cCleaner : CCleaner - Home run the program....
Then do a disk defragmentation. I then would suggest uninstalling programs you no longer use and check how many programs are set to run on startup and maybe reduce the number. You could also check, your drivers and Operating System is fully up to date. Try those and report back please ,Malcom |

I took out one stick, task manager showed 2 GB and used about 800MB, but the computer acted the same way. Very laggy and would freeze for periods of time, during which I can still move my mouse, but can't click on anything.
Everything seems fine during startup, it's only when you want to open folders or run a program that it starts to freeze. Any other ideas? I thought system restore would fix any problem. Should I restore to a previous date? Why is safe mode working perfectly? |

Just downloaded and ran CCleaner. It's a great program and seems like something that should come standard with windows. Thanks for the link.
I'm going to try starting up normally now, and if it doesn't work, I'll just restore to an earlier point. |
