Question Microphone Problem

Recently I installed a Pluscom Webcam with an intergrated microphone. The camera workes well and pruduces sharpe pictures but I can't get the microphone to work.

I'm running Vista Premium SP2 and have Creative Sound Blaster Xtreme installed.

When I look in Control Panel/Sound/Recording/Sound under Microphone it says:

"Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio
Not plugged in."

I have tried plugging the mic jack into every socket possible but to no avail. I have tested the Webcan and mic on my laptop and they both work perfectly.

Can anyone please suggest what might be causing the problem and how to solve it?

Sounds like (geddit?) a faulty connection or incorrect drivers.

Can you borrow a microphone off friend/family & see if that works?

Hi elpmek

No I don't know anyone who has a mic. It has been suggested that I should uninstall Sound Blaster. Do you think there is any milage in that? I do have the disc.

Firstly, I take it the webcam has only a usb connection/wire?

On windows XP you have to tell windows which connection to use for recording, eg Soundblaster Audio or USB device audio. This can be done by going to control panel->Sounds and audio devices then click the 'Audio' tab and change the 'Recording' option. Also, make sure 'Use only default devices' is unchecked. Hopefully Vista isn't too different.

If you have an upto date version of msn mesenger, open it and click Show menu->Tools->Audeo and video setup... then select the correct device to use as a microphone and you should see a bar to the left of the volume slider at the bottom.
or
Open an audio recording program. Not one of the sound blaster package as that may only allow recording via the sound blaster card. Try recording a short audio sample and then play it back.

Good luck

The webcam does have a USB connector but the mic has a jack.

Vista does not have the same set up in Sounds as XP but "Recording" it does show a mic icon and identifies Sound Blaster. The mic is shown as not connected.

In MSN the speaker test works but not the audio, the mic is greyed out and no sound is registered; it does show Sound Blaster.

Okay so the webcam has an integrated mic (webcam and mic in one unit) and has a usb lead 'and' a audio mini-jack connector/lead? Or is the mic a seperate entity that came with the webcam?
What is the model of your webcam?
