Default Earthlink Save Password Check-box

Hello,

I am trying to find a way to disable the Save Password check-box that appears when I first connect to Earthlink (with dial-up). I am using Win XP Home and Total Access 2005. We have a teenager here who is checking this box when no one is looking so he can access the Internet when he is not supposed to. I cannot be there to watch him all the time, and it is easy for him to do this without his grandmother noticing. We don't want to keep him off the Internet entirely, just to prevent him from working around the password. Earthlink support has been no help. Is there some 3rd party software that I could download to get around this problem? I am checking out Blue Coat K9, and any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Hello and Welcome Dilbert41!

Give this a shot.

check administrative tools
local security policy
local policies
security options

on the right panel "network access: do not allow storage of credentials or .net" and set to DISABLE

I hope this helps!

Thanks for the suggestion, but it doesn't seem to help. I think most of the problem is that the Earthlink software has never worked exactly the way it was supposed to. I'm disabling the modem until a better solution comes along.

There's no solution more sure than disabling the hardware or removing the cords. I wish there were!

Just a thought - but perhaps create different password protected logins for each member of the family. Those can be time restricted - at least I know I can do that on my work network. Either limit by time of day (start & finish) or number of hours available.

If you have additional questions, others will be available to address them for you. I will be taking an extended weekend away from the computer

I do not know if this will work or not, go here and scroll down to number four in the list and do the registry edit: Dial-up networking password is not saved

View the DisablePwdCaching value (a DWORD value) in the following registry key:

Code:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Network\DisablePwdCaching
If password caching is disabled, the DisablePwdCaching value has a value data of 1.

Leave it on 1 and it should not save the dial up password hopefully...

Here's how to make a new DWORD if you are not sure

Right mouse click on policies / New / DWORD rename New Value #1 and paste DisablePwdCaching in.

Then right mouse click DisablePwdCaching in the right hand pane, and select Modify / Value Data and put 1 in the box...
