Bolded inside the quote in my previous post are my responses to each step. Off the top of my head, I don't think I completed 1 or 9 properly.

Flash stores its files in a temporary files folder. A corrupt download can cause the sound problems.

Delete the following folders:
C:\Documents and Settings\%UserName%\Application Data\Adobe\Flash Player
C:\Documents and Settings\%UserName%\Application Data\Macromedia\Flash Player

Can't seem to find the Application Data folder - could just be because of the way Vista organizes things?
Ok, this was for XP - for Vista it's C:\Users\<Username>\AppData\Roaming

Also, download and run CCleaner Free.

OK, I've deleted the AppData folders, run CCleaner, and installed the latest version of Flash Player. Unfortunately, this hasn't solved the problem.

Save it as missing.reg (Make sure you include the Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 line) and then double click on the saved file to import it into your registry.

I'm so sorry I couldn't get this up earlier - I haven't had internet access for the past couple of days.

It turns out that there are other applications with sound problems, as well. Though I can view video through Windows Media Player, for some reason DVDs are muted.

I tested this on Windows Media Centre, which went as far as to say that it was not detecting an audio device. This is odd, because when I view connected hardware it does detect my speakers, and they do produce sound.

Just a bit of an update - I added that file to the registry, but the problem does persist.

Additionally, I uninstalled the drivers for the speakers and had the computer automatically reinstall them after a restart and I've tried to update the drivers, but neither had any effect.
