hi, i'm using WinAVi Video Converter 8.0 to convert video files from a divx codec to xvid codec. i was wondering why is the file size about twice as big as the original after the file has been converted?
i have used some trial versions of other converted which convert half of the file because its a trial and the size is half the original due to half being converted. thanks in advance.

It is a bit of a waste of time trying doing that. DivX and XviD are basically the same file structure in a avi container.
XviD is a Open Source codec, and DivX is not, both are about the same quality when encoded correctly...

I know that they are basically the same but when i try playing divx files on my portable dvd player, it doesnt work however xvid file do work. i tried to update the softwatre on the dvd player but it never worked, thats why i am converting the files instead.

Hi zkm,
As Arctos has already mentioned, the two are pretty much the same thing except for the licensing (DivX being a proprietary codec whereas Xvid is free under the GNU public license). Both DivX and Xvid use the MPEG-4 ASP compression standard, so while there may be some minor compatibility issues between players (probably due to optional features used in the encoding process that the player doesn't support), generally any MPEG-4 ASP compatible DVD player should play both just fine. Note that there's no such thing as "Xvid video" or "DivX video" - both are MPEG-4 ASP video - you're not playing Xvid or DivX video but rather decoding MPEG-4 ASP video (the format) with DivX/Xvid (the codec). It's because of this that converting between the two isn't always necessary, as the DivX decoder can play Xvid files and vice versa, you can often use the two interchangeably. You might get away with using a tool to change the FourCC code of the file from "XVID" to "DIVX". AVI FourCC Changer | Software - (DivX/XviD) Digital Digest

I see... I think AutoGK will do what you want:
