Yep, that's it. Since we had problems mapping a drive from the Vista machine to XP, were going to try the reverse. So this means following the same instructions, but but where we said XP, we really mean Vista, and visa versa. Make sense?

It doesn't really matter which way we map a drive, as long as we map a drive.

Alternative if were still having problems (we really shouldn't be):
- Take the hard drive out of the Vista machine, and connect it directly to the XP one.
- Obtain an external hard drive.

OK, it's just the same instructions you followed previously, but in reverse.

One moment, I'll go back and get em...

OK, from Vista:
- Create a new folder anywhere on your PC, desktop even, call it MyShare
- Right click on the new folder, and go to Properties followed by the Sharing tab.
- Click on Share and tick "Share this folder", and make sure the share name is called MyShare
- Click on Permissions tab, and make sure the "Everybody" group has "Read" access ticked, and finally click on OK, OK

- Go to Control Panel, Windows Firewall, and turn it off for this exercise. If you have any other firewall software, such as Zone Alarm, you'll need to turn this off too (anything that may prevent you from accessing the PC remotely).

- Go to Start and in the search bar, type in ipconfig and note the IP address of the PC, most likely 192.168.?.? (Note that if you restart the PC to double check this address hasn't changed).

From XP#1:
- Go to Start, Run and type in cmd
- From the command prompt, type in ping followed by the IP address of the Vista PC - make sure you get a reply.

- Right click on My Computer, followed by Map Network Drive.
- Drive letter Z:, path should be \\IP Address\MyShare - for example, it might be something like \\192.168.0.4\MyShare

EDIT: Trust me! Like I said, it doesn't matter which way we do this, as long as we map a drive from one PC to another.

Wasn't 192.168.1.101 the address of the XP machine previously? Can you run through the process one more time, just to make sure a step wasn't missed somewhere along the line. There's no reason why it would be timing out, unless there is some other firewall on the Vista PC.
