I've been on here before and thanks again to those who assisted me with my last computer. I now have a different laptop to correct...and this one has even bigger issues. It is an IBM Thinkpad t60 1951 A31 running Windows XP SP3.
I began by trying to uninstall unimportant programs because I knew the laptop had driver issues and it was running very slowly. I thought removal would at least decrease the annoyance of a slow system if not improve the repair process. I then found another issue. The InstallShield would not unstall any programs nor would windows installer.
I don't know a lot about computers but I've updated my drivers via the option on the driver manager, and since I wasn't sure what to do about the installer, I was hoping that fixing the driver first would help. When clicking the "update driver" button just like any other time, the result returned no better drivers for my computer. Yet the exclamation beside the driver remains. The driver reads HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4083N.
I'm sure where to find the driver that I need. I tried the lenovo site, but since my installer doesn't work I couldn't install anything there.
I tried the simple unregister/reregister, no results. I've uninstalled my installer and downloaded the redistributed windows installer 4.5 from Microsoft's website. When trying to install the file, however, I received the error message "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error."
So...I'm pretty much lost...

Welcome back baugh.sarah!
We always like seeing ones who liked us return.. tho with a problem like this, not much fun to do, I know. In your Control Panel, where you find the ! for the device.. delete it. On re-start, windows will find it and re-install the drivers that it knows are there. An I/O error is input/output... it seems that it simply does not know it is there. Try the above, and if nothing else, we can certainly get you all fixed. I have found no known issues on this for your Thinkpad, so far, so I think we just need to make it remember what it's supposed to do. Please let us know how it goes. Edit => Bear? Got some ideas?
