Default Need help w/ .bin extension or router driver

I just got a used Linksys wireless router #WRK54G, but did not get the installation cd with it. I downloaded the driver, which is in .bin format, but cannot open it.

After Googling .bin files for some help, I tried changing the extension to .exe, .zip, and .iso, but this did not help. I downloaded IsoBuster and was able to create "track 1.iso" which was 384 kb (and almost the same size as the .bin file), and burned that to a disk. When I installed the disk, the computer reads it as if it is blank.

I am not sure that I am using the IsoBuster software correctly, so maybe that is where I need help. Or maybe someone has the drivers for this router that they can send me? I am using Vista, but have dual-boot ability so can use XP if necessary.

Thanks for any help.

The .bin extension is a binary file.

What is the model of your router? (As in a Linksys what)

Hi 431cruiser,

You don't actually need the setup CD to configure the router you can actually it manually through the web configuration utility. You will need to connect to the wireless router via ethernet until you have finished setting up the Linksys. Please post back if you'd like instructions on how to do this please post back.

If you'd prefer to use the setup wizard do the following to burn the iso to CD.

Download IMGBurn from the link below and install it. Run IMGBurn > Click Write image file to disc. Click the browse for a file button (the little icon to the right of select a file with a magnifying glass). Select your bin or iso file. The click the button right down the bottom under verify. It will then burn the image to a CD.

Please post back if you still can't get it to burn.

Thanks, Crush, for the link. I will give that a try in the next day or two as that looked like the easiest method.

DIIRE, I used IMGBurn when I created the cd that I mentioned in my first post. The cd behaved as though it were blank when I used it although you can see by its size that something is on it.

Your message said to "select the bin or iso file". I did not realize I could burn the bin file directly to cd..that is why I tried to convert it to iso with ISOBuster. I am thinking that using ISOBuster, and my not being familiar with it, might be where my problem is. I have used IMGBurn for awhile and really like it. It is so easy to use and is fast.

Most of the time when you need drivers for something, you just go the website and download them without any problems. Why would these be in bin format instead of exe or something?

Thanks to both of you for your help. I will follow up with you in a few days.

The cd doesn't contain drivers it has the setup wizard on it. You don't need drivers to setup the router you just need to either run the setup wizard which is what you're trying to burn to the cd or access the routers configuration utility. You will also need to be connected to the router via ethernet cable for the initial setup.

To access it simply open Internet Explorer and in the address bar type: 192.168.1.1
You will get a popup prompting you for a username and password.
User name: Leave blank
Password: admin
Click Setup > Basic setup > Internet setup.
Leave it as Automatic Configuration - DHCP.

After you finished click Save Settings.
Click the Wireless tab.
Change the SSID to something else e.g. cruiserhome
Leave the Wireless channel as is and leave SSID Broadcast enabled.
Click Save Settings.
Select the Wireless Security tab.
Make the security mode WPA Pre-Shared Key - Leave WPA algorithm as TKIP.
Type whatever you want the wireless password to be in WPA Shared Key section. This is what you have to type in when you try to connect to your wireless network for the first time. Click Save Settings.

Another option you could try to use the wizard would be to mount the .bin file as a virtual drive with daemon tools. Daemon tools is free for home use but the newer versions comes bundled with adware. A free older version without the adware can be downloaded from the link below.

Daemon Tools 3.47 - DOWNLOAD at OLD VERSION.COM
