Default I need a good program that will copy my DVD video

I need a good program that will copy my DVD video to my computer and convert it to WMV or AVI in high quality, with no distortion to the sound or video. No trials, i already have several. I want something to keep.

I use a combination of programs. SmartRipper which is a free download. Even though the installer states that a virus and malware scan was performed, I downloaded and tested it myself just to make sure and it seems to be as stated free of such code. You will need to adjust the settings so that it makes a single VOB out of the rip, and you don't need the other files that it offers as optional (aka .IFO files).

Then I use #1 Video Converter to convert the .vob into .avi as this program is about as fast as anything I have seen. It isn't free and I purchased my copy.

There are many applications that will convert ".vob to .avi" and if you take that quoted text to a search engine you will be provided a list.

I will tell you this though. AVS Media SUCKS! Unless you want to be strong armed into purchasing a new copy every year. They have a time coding that disables there software from working once a new version is available and after a few years you can't even activate the copy you have if you need to reinstall it. That was my person experience and the company was up front in telling me in not so many words "We don't care, that's your problem, purchase the new release."

EDIT: I don't pirate video from DVD or condone it. I just prefer to have a digital copy. That's why I have two 1tb drives. It is much easier to find something to watch that way as I don't watch TV or pay the cable company for TV.

I have used AutoGK to convert DVD's to xvid successfully. You will need to read the manual / tutorial carefully though as it can be tricky for the new user...

Sounds good, but the issue there is that you don't get that wide of range of videos that it will let you convert unless you purchase the codec.

Dr DivX sucks, it is open source and it crashes all the time, even after I paid for the codec.

I use AutoGK to convert tv shows that are in mpeg2 format to xvid files. I do not have the divx codec on my computers (I do not really want it either) as I prefer the open source xvid.

I have found the divx tools to be little better than malware with their phoning home as well...
