Unhappy DirectX

Hello, I went online and attempted to update DirectX to the latest version, only my computer crashed during the process. I run Vista 64 as OS. On rebooting, I've lost all ability to connect to the internet. Internet explorer does not work. My modem, DSL, continues to function, my computer recognizes that I have broadband access, but it will not allow me to connect. And I can connect to the internet through my Xbox 360, so that's not the prob. I try to run the directx diagnostic, only I get an error message saying a .dll file will not load.

I've tried to restore my PC to a prior save point, but get an error message saying the VSS cannot be verified (not sure there). I've also tried reloading Vista, but get an error message after about 2 hours and it simply rolls back to the current state. No internet access. I really don't want to take a sledge to my PC, can anyone help? TY in advance.

Thankyou for the specs.Darn you got SLI and two GPU,s.,greedy.Just joking.

VSS is part of windows server:http://searchexchange.techtarget.com/generic/0,,sid43_gci1129054,00.html

Or it could be microsoft Visual Source for internet access.

I think we need Tech help on this one.

JB.

Hey thor, welcome to PCHF.

When you said "reloaded Vista", you mean you re-installed it from scratch?

The biggest problem with 64bit Vista is it's limitations and compatibility. This means that there are many applications that do not work with 64bit. You cannot download a 32bit driver and expect it to work with 64bit. If Vista has been re-installed, then first thing to look at is what was installed prior to these problems. On the first instance you mentioned DirectX, what was installed after the re-install?

Hey Mad, yep I tried to use the recover CD for Vista, but it's funny, I can't get that to work either. It goes through a very long process of backing up files, expanding files, etc. only to load and say that it has encountered a problem and has to roll back to the prior setting. Yup, the messed up setting that prompted me to try and reinstall Vista. Geesh...

But i think you are quite correct in that I probably tried to update my DirectX, erroneously (i didn't know that DirectX 10 came with Vista), and screwed the PC. JB just gave me a download that hopefully will fix the DirectX problem, which should restore internet explorer. I've got my fingers crossed.

ok thor, not sure how DirectX could have caused your IE problem, because they are not directly related. But come back and let us know and we'll do some troubleshooting

OK, tried everything I know to do... reinstalled DirectX, video drivers, tried to restore from a prior save point, have tried the recovery CD sent with the PC, can't load any new software to pc as I get an app crash message and still no internet (although the modem is working fine). I think my only option is to back up what I can, wipe the HD and reformat it and then reload Vista from scratch. =(

Thanks for your help guys, JB and Mad. =)
