Default Mpeg decoder for movie maker

Hi, just trying to import some mpg files from a camcorder into movie maker. Is there an codec for this as it wont allow this file type, I dont really want to have to convert them because it gets used often and thats the file the camcorders records them into.

Thanks

Hi Phil,

Your camcorder records in mpeg2 format. Movie Maker does not support this format. I would try downloading and installing the latest Movie Maker 2.1 from Microsoft (see link below) and then installing mpeg2 codecs.

Windows XP: Movie Maker 2.1 Download

After you have installed the above - download and install K-Lite mega codec pack below and hopefully Movie Maker will be able to recognise your mpeg2 files from the camcorder.

Free-Codecs.com :: Download K-Lite Mega Codec Pack 4.0.0 : The K-Lite Mega Codec Pack includes the K-Lite Codec Pack Full, QuickTime Alternative, Real Alternative support and Monkey's Audio DirectShow decoder.

Please post back if Movie Maker will still not recognise the mpeg2 files (camcorder files).

As I said in my earlier post - Movie Maker doesn't natively support mpeg2. The easiest option will be to convert the mpeg2's to wmv format. Microsoft have a free encoder that does this. However I have not used it. You can get the download from the link below.

Windows Media Encoder

The following has instructions on how to get Movie Maker 2 to import mpeg2's using K-Lite Mega Codec Pack. It's a lot of reading but apparently it can be done.

Hi phil
I have a software called Ulead Video Toolbox 2.0 on my pc you could try downloading that as this is a great program for converting all sorts of video files.

Ok I tried following the page using k-lite codecs but I still have no joy with video. I can play mpg videos with sound in media player now, but still when trying to open them in movie maker I get sound but no video!! Unfortunatley I really dont want to resort to having to convert these videos to avis each time because their are several of these sony cameras in the school that teachers just want to be able to connect to the computer and put their clips together in as little time possible. I find it strange that there isnt a proper fix out for this yet from microsoft.

Any More suggestions greatly appreciated!

Phil
