Default Registry Key

For some reason on my friend's laptop when I try to register a registry key with the system it just opens a notepad document. I have double clicked it and also right clicked and clicked merge but it just keeps opening a notepad doc. On my own desktop all I have to do is double click on a registry key and it is plugged in. Is there anyway to fix this or input a registry key manually?

Hi and welcome to PCHF!

How are you doing this? Are you using a .reg file or a batch file? What are you trying to merge into the registry?

Also, always backup the registry before you make any changes! Messing around with your registry can really mess up a computer and make it unbootable.

Regards,
Adam

Hi

Its for a game-Diablo 2 LOD. I don't play it anymore but it's still installed on my computer. My friend wants to play it on his school laptop because its not a gaming laptop and diablo 2 is a light game. I don't/cant find the original cd with the serial number but on the net it has been said you can recover the cd keys by exporting the registry. He installed it with a keygen(unlegit) and I exported my game registry through regedit. I sent him the reg key but whenever I double click it or right click and click merge it just opens a notepad doc. Its a .reg file.

Is there a way to set the default action with registry files to plug em into the registry instead of opening a txt file?

I would second Adam's post --
Editing the registry is risky...
you don't mention the Operating System -- or what you are trying to do ?

Another way you can add the entry to the registry is by opening Registry Editor.
Click File > Import > Navigate to the .reg file > Click Open. You will receive a confirmation if was done correctly.
