Default Problem with installshield wizard

Hello,

I am new to this website, and forums generally, so i hope i have posted this question in the right place! I have also searched the forum for an answer and can't seem to find anything on this issue.

I have a Toshiba tecra s1 laptop with windows XP Pro SP2 OS. My computer was reformatted by a computing shop and when they gave it back to me, there were some functions that were not working properly. Firstly, on every shutdown, a pop up appears saying "sample not responding" and an option to end now appears with a progress bar. When the progress bar completes, the comp stops its shutdown until i physically push the end now button. Secondly, the mouse pad was not working properly (could not get the sides of the pad to be used as a scroll function) and my Fn+F5 key, used to change the display, was not working the way it used to (no pop up pictures to choose between 5 different options anymore). I realized that i needed a dual pointing device utility installed so that i could adjust the properties of the mouse pad so i inserted the product recovery disk looking for a solution to that problem. In looking through the disk, i found out that the dual pointing device utility needed another utility (TOSHIBA hotkey utility V1.00.33M) installed first for the other to work properly. Also, i found out that there was a different utility needed for the Fn+ F5 to work properly (TOSHIBA hotkey utility for display devices V1.00.06M) but this also needed the same other utility to be installed first.

So i clicked on the install button for the TOSHIBA hotkey utility V1.00.33M and the cursor went to the hour glass for a moment but never did anything else. I thought it had finished after waiting a few minutes so i did the same with the TOSHIBA hotkey utility for display devices V1.00.06M (which had the same result). I then installed the TOSHIBA dual pointing device utility V1.0.0.2 which actually went to an installshield wizard page and installed correctly. I then restarted my comp and a message came up saying hotkey utility is preparing installshield wizard to set up this file and the progress bar goes to 99%. Then another popup appears saying "ins5576._MP - DLL initialization failed because the machine is shutting down". The machine shuts down and restarts normally. I then uninstalled the dual pointing device utility and tried to get the TOSHIBA hotkey utility V1.00.33M installed by itself. I tried this process more than 10 times , waiting sometimes up to 2 hours after pushing the install button and then shutting down. The same popup appears only after the machine starts it's shutting down process.

Any Help on this matter would be greatly appreciated and i apologise again if this is in the wrong thread.

Regards
Laz

Hello Laz and welcome to PC Help Forum

You say that you have just had this repaired - have you told the repair company? It seems as though they have not given you a very good service and they certainly haven't re-built the PC to anything like the level you should expect! It seems as though you have multiple problems and as you have already paid for a service you have not received, I would strongly suggest you speak to the company before taking up your time working thru solutions here or anywhere else.

Let us know how you get on and we'll take it from there

Hello Hengis,

Thank you for your welcome and speedy reply!!

They definitely didn't provide the type of service i was expecting of them. I took the laptop back to them, the day after it was returned to me, regarding the "sample not responding issue". They took the laptop back and kept it for 4 days only to say that there was no solution to that problem. While they had the laptop the second time, they also broke a cover for an input area on the base of the laptop. In short, to be without a laptop for another week (i am a student and use my laptop extensively) and the fact that i have lost faith in their ability has made me tentative to go back and see them again. Just thought you guys may have encountered this type of problem before and could guide me through a solution.

Cheers
Laz

Hello again,

It has been 1 week since my last post and so I'm writing because I'm not sure whether my last post was interpreted ambiguously. Just to clarify my last post, i am looking for some help on the above issues because i have lost faith in the repair company and so, do not want to take the laptop back to them. I understand you guys must be really busy and that you provide a fantastic service for us who are less PC inclined, but i thought i should post this to make sure you know that i am still around and waiting patiently.

Cheers
Laz

Hello -- Sorry about the delay.
Hengis is recovering from a medical procedure...
Was this an "authorized repair shop" ?
If so I would raise the issue with Toshiba...
and any business association.

Please allow me some time to see if I can research your issue.

I would first try totally uninstalling your mousepad drivers-- and reinstalling... sometimes with these types of things you must install the software in a particular order...
I had aslo run across reports of mobo failures on that model.

Sorry I can't be of more assistance... let us know how you make out.

Maybe you can figure it out yourself...DIY laptop manuals
How to open Toshiba Satellite S1 laptop case and remove the system board.

Hello ih8bills,

I have already tried uninstalling and reinstalling my driver's. This completes successfully but i can't install the two utilities required to run the dual pointing device utility. As mentioned above, install shield wizard works fine for everything else, except for these two utilities.
The sample not responding issue only appeared after the computer shop reformatted my computer.
It seems a little weird that this would be a motherboard issue considering everything else works fine and that it has never done this before.

Do you, or anyone else have any other ideas?? If not, thank you very much for your help!!

Cheers
Laz
