Thumbs up [Fixed] Floppy help for transfering some files

Recently got a new (used)Pentium IV computer that I'm just getting set up to use.I want to transfer some files from my old computer (Pent II)to the new one so I bought some 3 1/2" floppies (memorex)to transfer them. The problem occurs when I put one of the new floppies into my old computer to format them I get a message saying the floppy is the wrong size or damaged. The floppies are brand new and say the capacity is 2.0 mg unformatted and 1.4 mg formatted. Is my problem because of the 2 mg unformatted size or something else, and is there anything I can do to correct this? Thanks for any help!

Incidentally old computer is running Win 98. New computer has XP home

Ahhhh the mix maybe the problem 98/XP.
Floppys can be damaged, can you try them in XP computer and try formatting them there first?
Also I find 1 in 6 floppys I buy usaly do not work or are damaged.

Hello Jerseyguy, welcome to PCHF.

It could be the floppy drive itself. I'm not sure of the PC's history, but if it's running Windows 98 then it's likely to be quite old. If the floppy drive hasn't been used for a while it may just need a cleaning disk, possibly clogged with dust. The heads of the drive could be worn or damaged. Also, the metal plates of the floppy disks themselves have a tendancy of getting stuck in the drives.

First things first though, have you tried the disks on your other PC?

EDIT: err, chickens.. I mean sorry Jelly Bean, didn't realise you posted lol.
