Adobe Photoshop CS 8.0 Color replacement tool

Photoshop CS Version 8.0

I'm trying to remove red eye with the color replacement tool but the replacement color shows as grey when I have selected black. I'm using the following settings:

Mode: Color
Sampling: Once
Limits: Discontiguous
Tolerance: 30%

Any ideas on how do I fix this?
