Default Updating QuickTime 7.3.1

XPpro/SP2/IE7

Installed the latest version of QuickTime (7.3.1). When in Help I click check for updates
I immediately get an error message:

Microsoft visual C++ Runtime Lbrary
Program: C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QuickTimePlayer.exe
A buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the program's internal state. The program cannot safely continue and must be terminated.

This has happened in two computers I use. Curiously if I delve into the program files I find an "Apple" update which works (I think?) without this message.

Any ideas why and a solution would be welcome.

Doesn't really help as this refers to version 7.1.5 and I have 7.3.1
