Unhappy Paperport - invalid page fault

I have Paperport 7.0 deluxe & run Windows 98 SE

The program worked fine until recently but now, when opening the program & it loads to app 97% I get the following error message:
This program has performed an illegal operation
Details: PAPRPORT caused an invalid page fault in module RPCRT4.DLL at 01a7:7fbd0894.
Registers:EAX=006837f3 CS=01a7 EIP=7fbd0894 EFLGS=00010212

I've reinstalled the program
I've downloaded RPCRT4.DLL but can't put it in Windows system - as the existing one is already being used by Windows
I've downloaded 2 service packs from Nuance
......but no difference

I'm wondering if I've downloaded something or something has installed itself on my PC which has suddenly caused this fault - but I'm not sure of the exact date when the problem began!!

I'd really appreciate help!!!

Howdy Going Grey.. And Welcome to PCHF,

DO you happen to have a dell?

Aslo try this

Go to Start/run, and type Msconfig.
Go to the startup yab, locate FBdirect.exe, and remove the checkmark.
Click OK, close Msconfig, and reboot.

You should not get the error any more. Now check whether you can print and scan OK.

If not, please report back.

Many thanks for your help, merlin!

No, my PC isn't a dell. It was built by a local shop....

I found and searched the startup list in msconfig but couldn't find FBdirect.exe
I finally did a computer search for it but it wasn't found.

I have a HP psc all-in-one 2175 which I re-installed - as I understand that conflicts can arise with Paperport but it made no difference.

I'd be most grateful for any further suggestions as I did use Paperport a lot!
