Default [Resolved] Transfering files

Hi

Not too sure if this is the right section to be posting this in but none seemed quite right so thought id try this one.
A friend of mine has recently changed computers and wants to transfer some music files from the old computer to the new one, however there are alot of files (about 3GB). I am not sure of the best way to do this, i dont have a networking cable but could easily go out and buy one if this is the best way, its the best i can think of but thought id see if anyone had any other ideas.
I have a memory stick, but being only 256MB size would mean alot of trips, and attempting to compress the files doesnt actually appear to do anything to the size of it all!!

Thanks in advance

Vicky

Hello VickyA,

Does the old computer have a DVD burner? You could just burn the files to a DVD then move them over.

The easiest way for me would be to just take the old hard drive out and hook it up to the new computer. And if he is junking the old computer, then he has a second hard drive to store stuff to that way.

If those ideas don't work for you and you still want to try the network cable method, make sure you buy a crossover cable. Unless you have a regular network set up with a router. A regular network cable is meant to be attached to some sort of network routing device, not directly to another computer.

Hope that info helps!

Another option (without removing hard drives) is to get a Flash drive. See link.

The price depends on the size.
I would recommend a 2G unit. In two passes all the files would be transferred.
And they are nice to have for moving files around.
