Default download "airlock"?

Hey all,

I dunno if this is the right section to post this is but, here goes. I'm wondering, if I were to partition part of my hard drive off, say 10 gigs, and used it as an "airlock" to download things to and scan before moving it to the real HD, would that work? basically, is partitioning enough to trap viruses and such till they can be killed? Thanks ahead of time!!

I automatically put all my downloaded program files on my F drive.
You can then scan the file residing on the F (example) before running it.
It doesn't matter where you put the download, I just do it for tidyness.
Leave the file on the F drive and open it, once scanned, from there.
It will automatically seek out the system drive ie C: to install to.
It's also good house keeping as if you decide to format C: you still have the downloaded .exe files intact.

I do something similar also. But are you saying that yes it would work? that the partition would enclose any viruses from spreading?

Until you execute the file it will sit thare all day long doing nothing.
The same thing applies to email attachments, until you open them nothing happens.
When you do then a missile of the foulest description could hit the revolving apparatus.

So just downloading the file isnt a risk? Till you actually click on the file you have all the time in the world to scan it?

Depends on the type of file and type of possible virus...
But most .exe files won't run until you run the file it is attached to.
