Default 'Found New Hardware' Wizard

I have several bits of new hardware connected to my pc via USB. When i connect each one, the 'Found New Hardware' Wizard pops up. It asks if i want to install the hardware, i say yes and it asks me whether it should search my system for the installation software of if i want to browse for it. Neither of these options is any good, as i dont (and never have had) the installation CD. However, i'm sure that when i have connect things in the past, windows just goes away and looks for the installation software on the internet. This isnt happening and i cant see anything in control panel to make it do it. Im using Windows XP SP2. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Hi aalindo, welcome to the board. Try this:

-Right click on My Computer on the Desktop, click Properties, click Hardware, click device manager, and find what devices you have installed. Right click on them and click "Update driver". It will give you the option to connect to the internet (Windows Update) for drivers.

If that doesn't work try right clicking on "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" in device manager, click on "scan for hardware changes". It may find what devices you have added, and then you can search for drivers from there.

Thanks, i will give that a go, but i am at a different house now. Will a driver update work if windows doesnt recognise the hardware in the first place?

Windows should find the new hardware added if you "Scan for Hardware Changes" under Universal Serial Bus Controllers.

See what you come up with. Let me know.
