Default apps take a long time to start

hi,
recently my computer has been taking its time whenever i open large games up. examples would be :
Guild Wars
Quake 4
Sims 2
War Rock
when i double click on it the program runs in task manager, but nothing happens for like 3 minutes. it just sits there, not doing anything but taking up RAM.
please help!

Specs:
AMD Athlon 64 3300+
nVidia nForce 3 754 socket
1 GB DDR-400 RAM (2x512)
GeForce 6600 GT 128mb
500w PS

Hello nate5610,

Welcome to PCHF.

At this point, it could be absolutely anything from malware to hardware fault. When did this problem start, and did you build this PC yourself? Is there anything other than games that have this problem?

Thanks for replying!

I did build this by myself, about a year ago. The problem started showing up about a month ago, and its only slow with games. I dont really have any programs other than games that require alot of processing though, so im not sure. i had a program installed, one of those XP Tweaker kind of programs. once i changed some settings these problems started to show up, so i set everything back to default and uninstalled the program. But this had no effect.

ek, that complicates things a little. Do you know what was tweaked altogether, was anything overclocked? Have you ever had any error messages that may help to identify the problem?
