Default [Answered] Digital Camera Resolution

Todays commonly available point & shoot camera's offer high resolution (8 mega-pixels or more). The maximum screen resolution on my new laptop is 1680x1050. That's about 1.7 mega-pixels. If you are looking at the pictures you take on your computer, it seems like the extra pixels are wasted. I can see where the extra pixels are nice to have if you are printing high resolution pictures. Am I misunderstanding something? Why all the interest in high resolution cameras?

thanks..................matt

Wellll....

Most camera's have the option of using less.

The advantage of the extra pixels is that you can zoom in with clarity. Also, for my important photo's, I tend to keep a hard copy in my photo album. I believe that not only is this safer (no worries about your HDD crashing), but I would rather show pictures from a photo album than my PC. Just my personal preference.
