Default Startup Programs

In Windows 2000, how do you prevent a program from automatically starting when Windows loads?

Specifically, I have a PC running Win2K that automatically loads AIM (and bogs everything down). In Win XP, I can run MSCONFIG, click the Startup tab, and uncheck programs I don't want to automatically load. How do I do the same thing in Win2K?

In Win2K, I looked at System Information under Startup and can see the Aim program but can't see how to remove it from the Startup folder. Also, the location is given as "HKU\S-1-5-21-16....(and so forth). Where is this location?

thanks.........................matt

for the 2000 version of msconfig, which is what allows you to view what is booting with the pc, you need to download StartUpCPL.exe. You can get it at Freeware files, utilities, anti-spyware tools, & nifty toys with some rudimentary instructions on what happens when you run the .exe. Basically, a new entry is put in your control panel called startup, and that will allow you to add/remove apps from several different directories of startup, including the registry.

I keep that on a usb key,. as the environment I work in is about 40% win 2k, and it really comes in handy.

thanks,

v
