Default Media Players Keep Freezing

Hi everybody, I was registered here a couple of years ago but can't remember my log in info and I've changed emails since then. So I've re-registered.

Anyhow here's my problem. For some reason whenever I play any type of video on my PC, whether it's a DVD or a video that I've downloaded it often freezes. Sometimes I can watch an entire movie with no problems, but more often than not it will just freeze out of the blue, and if I try to restart the video it will often freeze again in the same spot. It doesn't matter what type of media player I'm using, or what type of video I'm playing.

I believe I updated my video card drivers but that has not solved the problem. I have not always had this problem, it just started maybe a year ago.

I'm using a Gateway PC with Windows XP. Any ideas on what in the world could be wrong? It's really frustrating.

Hey Jerry,

Welcome BACK! A year huh? You are a patient person. LOL

Are you sure that your PC is completely updated?

Have you updated your codecs?

Have you checked your temps while running a movie?

These are all things that could cause symptoms similar to what you are describing.

Oh, and could you please post the make/model/specs on your PC? RAM, MOBO, CPU, etc. It could also be a hardware issue. Thanks,

Looking forward to your reply,

TTFN

Hi, thanks for your response.

Could you please tell me how I can find out all my specs? Or is there perhaps another thread here on the site that explains that?

As far as keeping my PC updated the only thing I can think of is that I do receive automatic updates from Windows, (Live Updates). Is there anything else you suggest?

I'm not sure what you mean about the codecs and temps, could you explain those more to me or direct me to a thread that explains those?

I'm sorry that I don't understand more currently, I still don't know a lot when it comes to computers I guess.

Please dowload and run Systemspec:
http://www.alexnolan.net/software/SysSpec.exe

Press the big "system" button in the top left , and when you see youre system specs , press the little arrow next to it and select "Info to clipboard".
Then post the log by rightclicking in a new reply here and press "paste".

That should probebly be ok then.

You can use this app to see the temps , and also voltages of youre pc:

http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php

And do you remember installing any codecs , or codec packs in the past?

Let's have a look at add/remove programs:

Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

And you could give the "basic" or "standart" codec packs from here a try to see if that fixes youre problem:

I'm sorry that I don't understand more currently, I still don't know a lot when it comes to computers I guess.
Thats what we are here for.

Thanks for that Joe, .

@Jerry, don't worry, you don't need to know all about computers and that stuff, that's what we're here for .

By the way, it is very helpful with SpeedFan if you post the screen shot of the results.

Looking forward to your reply,

Thank you for your help, I can definitely tell we'll get this problem solved one way or another. I'll get to the other portions of Joe's post as soon as possible. I wanted to post my computer specs though to start with. Let me know if anything jumps out at you.

Ok onto the next step I've downloaded the SpeedFan. I have it running right now but I'm not sure what I'm supposed to report to you in order to help you find out the temps. So just let me know what I can share regarding that.

And should I leave this program running all the time from now on or how do I go about using it?
