Default Windows Media player

I'm having problems with my Windows Media Player. I have Windows Media Player 10.

Yesterday I downloaded a movie off the internet. When I played it at first it said there was an error downloading one of the codec. There was no video but I could hear sound. I clicked on web help from the dialog box that popped up. I downloaded a DivX package that it recommended. After that was downloaded I played the movie again. This time the video played but no sound, and this time no dialog box popped up. The movie file on the WMP toolbar was highlighted orange with an exclamation point next to it. I right clicked it and clicked on "view error" or something to that effect. It said I had to download the Dolby AC3 (2000) codec.

I searched the internet and found it. I downloaded it and viola, the movie played just fine. Both video and audio was working. Now heres the problem; I realized that my other WMP files do not have any sound anymore. All my other WMP audio files and movies don't play any sound. So I uninstalled the Dolby AC3 codec, and still no sound on my other WMP files. I clicked on the help tab in my WMP, but or all the things to have, they don't have a section on the WMP playing without any sound.

I've tried everything. I downloaded new microsoft updates, a new directX, etc. Along with WMP, I have RealPlayer and Quicktime. So I played one of my WMP files with RealPlayer and it worked. There was video and sound. So there is something definitely wrong with my WMP. What do I do?

Hi there, this is going to seem like a dumb question but don't be offended in any way, but is your volume control turned up in wmp? you know the little bar you pull across to turn up the volume, push it to the right. Also can I recommend windows media player 11, which can be downloaded from Here also on the website if you click on the drop down box next to the words "Select Download"and click codec installation packages you will find there are some codecs that should work on both wmp10 and wmp11, try downloading them and see if you have any luck, hope this helps yours Dave

You know, I never really thought about that. After reading this I went back ino WMP and played a random mp3. When I opened it the same problem was there. The bars was moving but no sound. The volume on the WMP was all the way to the right. So I moved the slider all the way to the left, and back to the right and the sound came back on. To me that's very weird. But now after that, I have audio on all my files again. I don't know what that was, but I assumed it had to be a glitch or something.

Thanks for helping me.

Default WMP sucks, use VLC instead

Hi all,

I always have problem WMP, codecs, complaints, error messages. Once I tried VLC player, I never touch WMP again! Try it out for yourself!
