Default [Resolved] Installing Norton System Works

I recently downloaded the 2006 versions of Norton Internet Security (NIS) and Norton System Works (NSW). After much difficulty (mostly getting all the existing Norton programs to stop running), I got NIS installed. But I can't get the new version of NSW to install. As soon as the installer starts, I get the message, "NSW2006B Folder is not accessible." I've search the Symantec knowledge base for the problem. They say it occurs when the user does not have WinXP administrative rights. I am the only user on the machine and have full administrative rights.

I'm reluctant to uninstall the existing version of NSW because there are many parameters I have set over the years that I would like to retain.

Hey Rwberman,

Welcome to PCHF. We have a wonderful team of techs on site, and I am sure that we can help you get NWS installed, if you still want to.

Unfortunately, there have been lots of reported difficulties with upgrades to NSW '06. Symantec doesn't seem very concerned about it though.

My first suggestion as you so want to upgrade as opposed to a clean install is to boot into Safe Mode and try installing from there. Make sure that you disable any portion of NSW that starts up in Safe Mode, although there shouldn't be many.

Please post back and let us know if that works for you.

Looking forward to your reply,

TTFN

Hya Rwberman.

So if im reading this correct you didn't uninstall , but only stopped the old apps?

Was there no option to just upgrade the old install? (if that was also NIS)
And you also couldn't uninstall it? It sounds like you now probebly have 2 separete NIS installs on there. (maybe even also 2 system works?)

Best thing to do now is to remove all Norton software from youre pc , and then reinstall only the new version.

If you have problems removing them , then please post the excact apps versions and years that you have installed now.

Thanks for the two replies. I believe that I effected a clean upgrade of NIS. There is only one version of the program in my system and it seems to be running fine. Only the NSW 2003 is currently installed. I couldn't get to first base with NSW 2006. I believe I will try the SAFE Mode install and see how that works. Will report back later. Thanks again.

Got it! In a somewhat indirect way, the SAFE MODE was the key, though not actually the solution to the problem. Here's what happened: In SAFE MODE, I found that the CD could not be read (not sure why not). I remebered that I still had the software stored on my hard drive from the original download. It wouldn't install from there either because Windows in SAFE MODE can't seem to fool with Norton. So, I booted up in NORMAL mode and tried to install from the hard drive copy and it worked fine.

Thanks for the suggestions.
