Default [Resolved] Opening .dat files

Hello,

Does anyone know of a program that will open .dat files I receive in lotus notes? I know the file is generated when some one sends an email from outlook/exchange in rich text format and I would rather fix the problem on my end and not bother the sender. Any ideas. Thx

Howdy there,

The only thing I can think of is using either of the programs below:
  • notepad
  • lotus notes
  • excel.
Try to right click on the file and open with notepad (make sure there is no tick in "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file")

If notepad doesn't work then try to do the same for the other programs
  • Does it come through as winmail.dat?

Pretty much any text editor can open .dat files but it's just a matter of associating a text editor with .dat files.

Hi Zimbo,

It comes through as ATT0001.DAT and the text editors opened the file but the text was all scrambled. There were two .pdf files in this .dat attachment and I actually found a program that worked pretty good to extract them. It's free and it will extract attachments from C.DAT, WINMAIL.DAT or ATT0001.DAT sent by outlook users. I will include the web site where you can get this program if any other lotus users run into this problem. Thanks.

Here it is : http://www.fentun.com/

That would not be a very smart thing to do , if you do that then after that all .dat files will be opened with Notepad instead of the app that should open it..
