Question [Resolved] MBR/BPB Problems On Start-Up

When I start-up my computer, Norton GoBack prompts me that there are some critical sectors on my #2 disk that can not be accessed and/or are bad. It says it will try to fix them. I click OK and then it prompts something about it can't restore the MBR or BPB and I should manually restore the MBR with some utility. Well, today I was changing partitions sizes and making system partitions of a newly installed hard drive. The #2 disk on my computer is a removeable device, a digital camera card reader. The first two disk are my boot and slave drives. I believe when I used Norton Partition Magic to partition my new hard drive, the letter on the # disk, the card reader, was changed. Could this be able problem? I would also like to know about the MBR and BPB. What are they? Can they be reset? How? I am running a Sony Vaio with Windows XP w/ SP2 on my computer. I know some people my tell me to just forget about Symantec/Norton products, but I am looking for a serious answer. If there is any more information needed to help out, I can get it for you.

Hi Bj,

I see you made a decision on your harddrive, just out of curiosity what did you choose? (I am waiting on some data from one of the guys in order to create that poll we talked about.)

The acronym MBR stands for Master Boot Record, and BPD stands for Binary Printer Description file. What is the utility that Norton is suggesting you use to repair your MBR?

Looking forward to your reply,

TTFN

LGW

I bought a Seagate 300GB for what I hear was a pretty good price at $89.99$ US. The utility the Norton program say to use is something besides itself because it cannot do it.

It suggests to me, that from reading your post, that you should use the Recovery Console. (A feature of XP that allows you to repair things like the Mast Boot Record, to get your system working again.) This is usually accessed by booting off of the XP CD. See joe5's link that he posted for more info.

I don't have the XP CD because I have a Sony computer and they don't give your it, they give you 4 CD's that can reinstall everything, the OS and all applications that come preloaded.
