Default Need some recommendations on video editing programs (and a camera)

Ok well I'm really into video editing and for the past couple years I've been using Pinnacle 8, which was pretty good because it allowed me to do basically whatever I wanted editing-wise and wasn't too complicated. I recently upgraded to Pinnacle 10 plus. Well it works alright for uploading and editing video from my DV camera but I have several problems with it. Nearly all video I try to import from my computer which hasn't been uploaded by me directly like other videos that have been downloaded or sent to me, will not open. And, the very few times I have been able to open other video, the sound doesn't work. It's probably just a compatibilty issue but it's a big deal because it really limits what I can do. I have the latest updates and all that I just think it's the program itself and I need to get a better one. The program itself is also very unstable. It freezes and shuts down CONSTANTLY and it gets extremely annoying. Can anyone recommend a good video editing program that is compatible with basically any video and audio formats and will allow me to import from my camera. I want one that is just as easy to use and allows me to do just as much. I want one that is also stable and isn't freezing 99% of the time. If the program is a little more complicated but still learnable, that's fine. I'm pretty advanced when it comes to basically all software and now that I've been doing this for quite a while, I shouldn't have a problem with that.

Also, I realize this is a PC forum but if anyone could recommend a good digital video camera that isn't extremely expensive (I don't mean cheap just not thousands of dollars) and has good video quality and is an all around good camera, I'd appreciate it.

Hi Rory,

Welcome back. This is not my area of expertise as I am just beginning, but in all of my research Pinnacle Studios vsn 10 is the creme de la creme. The reviews are wonderful, that's the program I am about to buy.

Perhaps the problems you are having have to do with incorrect settings and file type associations. Have you verified that all possible video file types are opened with your new version 10? Did you completely uninstall version 8 before uninstalling 10? Are all of your windows and graphics drivers updated? Have you checked on the Pinacle website to see if there is a patch?

Have you done a registry clean up to remove associations with version 8?

Have you updated your codecs to the latest versions?

I am sure that some of the guys who have more experience with video editing will have more ideas, but the answers to my questions may turn out to be helpful.

Look forward to your reply,

TTFN

Version 8 was completely uninstalled when I installed version 10. All my drivers and codecs are the latest and I've already downloaded and installed the 10.1 patch.

I had the same problems with version 8 and I honestly think it's the program itself. Every time I try to open a video on my computer it just will not open it and this really bugs me because I need to be able to do this.

 Still looking for the information regarding file type associations. So version 8 wouldn't run anything except the video from your camera too, or if it could no sound?

Look forward to your reply,

Howdy - I work in the video production industry and I've had a JVC GR-DVL300U for about 4 years and it has been a great "around the house" consumer camera. I see JVC has about 4 cameras under $500, they're probably pretty good, I'd buy another one. If you're going to be doing a lot of shooting on a regular basis though, I would suggest investing a little more money in a prosumer range camera like a Canon XL1s (maybe even a used/refurbished one to save money) - the wear and tear takes a toll quickly on home video cameras. I've really taken care of mine, and that's very important in quality and longevity. As for software that plays multiple formats, yikes, that's tough. Many, if not most, of the programs like Studio, Edit & Avid use their own unique encryption methods and compatibility is difficult to come by. Adobe seems to be the best I've seen for using multiple formats, Adobe Premire, it's probably too expensive, and that's probably one of the major reasons why. Hopefully somebody will post a better option as far as working with multiple formats goes. I use Studio 8 for small stuff at home and it works great, but I agree, it certainly doesn't support other formats.
