Default Windows Media 10 - Nothing Plays

I recently updated (so they call it) to WMP10 and now nothing (audio or video) plays. Every file played fine in version 9, but now they all come back with error: "C00D1199: Cannot play the file." They all play fine in Real Player, but I prefer WMP (I know, "what a dork"). I've updated my nVidia driver and DirectX, I've re-installed WMP 10 numerous times, and I even somehow figured how to roll back to WMP 9, but I still get the same error. My eyes are going blurry trying to find a post with the same problem, so feel free to direct me there if this problem has already been solved. Thanks for any help you can offer. -Nedry :cheesy:

Hya Ruggrock , welcome to PCHF.

You could try reinstalling WMP's codecs from here:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...cdownload.aspx

Or give this a go:

In some cases people have run into this error when the wrong audio device is selected in WMP. Tools | Options | Devices | Speakers | Properties will allow you to change it.
from here:

I've updated drivers, codecs, and quadruple checked the speakers setting. I don't believe I'm doing these things incorrectly and I've read the chrisl page 15 times. I think there's some conflict between my cards and the updated WMP 10. If things (both audio & video) play fine in Real Player the cards are apparently working correctly, right? A couple weird errors as I've been screwing around, Win DVD won't play a DVD disc anymore, WMP10 pops open when I try to open WinDVD and I get the error: "Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer." Also, when I'm doing the (Tools | Options | Devices | Speakers | Properties ) speaker fix, the "Audio device to use" choice box is empty. I can't pick any device to use. Again, any help would be great, still dinking away with drivers and devices...thanks.

Here's just a follow-up to a very arduous fix. WMP 10 somehow corrupted some files deep in XP , and the Gateway people couldn't figure it out after about 10 hours, so I ended up re-installing/repairing XP itself. I was told to back-up "My Documents" and "My Pictures" as there was a good possibility that the repair would erase those folders, fortunately it didn't, and when I reinstalled WMP 10, it had a difficult time finding a couple DLL files, but I searched the computer and moved them to the desktop and pointed the install process there, and everything played, but I still couldn't hear audio in WMP, although I could see it playing and wasn't getting an error anymore. I fixed that with a codec pkg install, and everything seems to be working okay now. Thanks for all the help, and I sure hope nobody else has to go through that hassle.
